Job Summary:

The School of Science at Marist College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as an Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Biology, beginning August 2020. The successful candidate will teach the freshman biology class for science majors that emphasizes the foundations of cellular and molecular biology, an upper-level cell-/molecular-based course that complements existing departmental expertise, and the biology senior capping class.  If time permits, the candidate may also teach courses that support the College Core Curriculum.  Teaching responsibilities include 9 and 12 contact hours per week in alternating semesters. Marist recognizes teaching as the most important professional activity; however, scholarship and service to the College are also required. Faculty are expected to develop an active research program involving undergraduates and leading to peer-reviewed scientific publications.  The successful applicant will join a department characterized by a strong sense of community in which students are the central focus and faculty are both accessible and approachable. The ideal candidate is expected to collaborate with other faculty to provide an effective learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Biology or closely related field and a strong interest in undergraduate education. Although prior teaching experience is desirable, the potential to develop superior teaching skills and continually develop as a teacher are essential. The ideal candidate will have plans for a research program with the ability to include undergraduate research and excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Essential Functions:

Teaching instruction of undergraduates, especially in the first semester foundational class (General Biology I), upper-level courses in their area of expertise and the senior capstone class in biology. Teaching courses designed for non-science majors is also possible.

Establish and maintain a research program involving undergraduate students. Work with the faculty of the department, school, and college to examine and revise curriculum and educational policies, and aid the Department Chair with program assessment and projects that enhance the environment for students and colleagues.

Represent the School of Science and the Biology Department by participating in service activities and performing other duties as assigned (e.g., interacting with prospective students, attending student research presentations, organizing local conferences, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

At least one year of postdoctoral research experience is preferred.
