Job Summary:

Marist is seeking a self-starting, seasoned Director of Media Relations who will direct and lead college-wide media relations and external communications and seek out ways to enhance the College’s brand and increase exposure through earned media placements. This position is responsible for executing and overseeing the writing, editing, production, and pitching of optimized content that promotes the Marist brand, strategic initiatives, research, and accomplishments. The ideal candidate will have a “whatever it takes attitude” and be able to quickly develop and implement compelling content for owned and earned media that supports efforts to attract the best students, to motivate alumni, parents, and donors, and to attract world-class faculty and staff.  This position may include some hybrid/remote flexibility but will be primarily campus-based in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated track record of securing local, regional and national media placements and building influencer relationships
  • Minimum of 8+ years of related Media Relations experience
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills; flawless editing to support clear ideas
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, or public relations; Masters preferred
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, results-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Self-starter who thrives in ambiguous environments and adapts easily to change
  • Able to work under pressure quickly, effectively, and efficiently

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, develop and lead national, regional, and local media relations programs that favorably positions the College
  • Proactively seeks stories from students, faculty, and staff to craft pitches to the media and tell Marist’s story to all external constituents and publications
  • Collaborate with the Director of Communications to craft crisis statements to the media that are approved by legal, the President, and various cabinet-level executives within the College 
  • Serves as spokesperson on all critical and sensitive communications matters including crises and emergency communications
  • Work closely with the academic, alumni, and student affairs offices to build a faculty, alumni, and student influencer program
  • Collaborates with the Director of Internal Communications and Director of Marketing to develop and execute content and stories for distribution across digital platforms and to local, regional, and national media
  • Works directly with faculty and staff thought leaders on publishing editorial opinion pieces and letters to the editor; Develop and oversee faculty expert list
  • All other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in English, journalism, communications or public relations
