Job Summary:

Marist College invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Teacher Education. This is an administrative position housed within the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS).

The Assistant Dean directs the day-to-day operations of Marist’s Education programs and provide vision for future directions. Marist enrolls approximately 400 undergraduate and graduate students in Teacher Education programs, including: (1) elementary education, grades 1-6, with dual certification for students with disabilities (2) a birth through second grade add-on teacher certification, and (3) adolescence education, grades 7 – 12, with dual certification for students with disabilities in eight content areas (English, math, social studies, biology, chemistry, earth science, Spanish, and French). The department also offers an advanced master’s degree program in three delivery models: 5-year, summer hybrid, and campus-based formats.

The Assistant Dean for Teacher Education works with a Director for Graduate Programs in Education, two clinical field leaders, an Assessment Coordinator, and a departmental Administrative Assistant. The Assistant Dean for Teacher Education typically teaches two courses each academic year within the undergraduate or graduate teacher preparation programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in education or a closely related field, classroom teaching experience, and at least three years of higher education or school-based administrative experience. Knowledge of P-12 school partnerships, assessment, and accreditation in Education is required. Applicants must also demonstrate cultural competence and an understanding of how to construct as well as sustain a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community in higher education.   

Essential Functions:

Responsibilities for the Assistant Dean of Teacher Education include the following:

  • Provide leadership to enhance existing programs and develop new programs that are responsive to students’ needs
  • Maintain and develop productive relationships with our P-12 partners, the regional school community, government and accrediting agencies, and professional organizations and associations
  • Oversee the assessment and accreditation process; we are scheduled for a review with AAQEP in Fall of 2023
  • Spearhead student recruitment efforts, including speaking at marketing events, expanding outreach to under-represented groups, facilitating student transfer, and developing new student pipelines.
  • Understand the importance of creating an inclusive community with curriculum that is responsive to all learners as well as an awareness of current trends in the field that support underrepresented populations
  • Managing the day to day operations of the education department, such as: creating and managing course schedules for all education faculty; holding regular education department meetings; mentoring new faculty; recruiting and supervising part time faculty; advising and supporting students

 

Preferred Qualifications:

The Assistant Dean for Teacher Education will have the background in P-12 education as well as higher education teaching, scholarship, and service to serve as a trustworthy mentor for new as well as returning faculty and visionary leader for the department. Skills pertinent to creating assessment strategies, interpreting data, and engaging in the continuous improvement process are also critical. We seek a candidate with a record of innovative program and curriculum development and a commitment to high standards, inclusive practices, and continuous improvement for teacher education programs.

About the Department:

The Education department is one of four departments in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.  The other departments are psychology, criminal justice, and social work/sociology. The Assistant Dean reports to the Dean of SBS, and is part of the leadership team that guides the work in all the departments of SBS.
