Assistant Professor of English, Early Modern Literature

Job Summary:

The English Department at Marist University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English position in Early Modern Literature beginning Fall 2027. A willingness to work with undergraduate majors, minors, and non-majors from across campus is central to this position. We encourage applications from candidates whose work intersects with interdisciplinary programs on campus, such as Africana Studies, Global Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. We also encourage candidates working across different languages and national contexts to apply. Candidates should have an ability and willingness to teach introductory general education literature courses, as well as advanced undergraduate courses in their areas of specialization, to mentor student projects and organizations, and to collaborate with campus partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or a related field in hand before the start date of the appointment. Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level is required.

Essential Functions:

The teaching load will be 3-4, but faculty who achieve and maintain an outstanding record of scholarship may be eligible for a 3-3 teaching load. In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, faculty participate regularly in service activities for our students, Marist University, and the community.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in hand.

    • Typical eligibility requirements: 1 year of service and 1,000 hours with Marist University.
  • 403(b) Tax Deferred Annuity – Roth option available. Voluntary, up to IRS maximum contribution.
  • Tuition Benefits:
    • Up to 16 undergraduate credits per semester. Up to 18 graduate credit per academic calendar. Eligibility extends to employee, spouse, and dependent children under age 26.
    • University pays 100% tuition only.
    • Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.

*Eligibility requirements including waiting periods and/or employee probationary periods may apply at the discretion of the University.

About the Department/School:

The English Department includes 18 faculty members and offers a BA in English with Concentrations in Writing, Literature, and Theatre and Minors in Professional Writing, Creative Writing, Literature, and Theatre. The department contributes substantially to our First Year Seminar program, as well as our interdisciplinary programs including Africana Studies, American Studies, Global Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Asian Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The English Department is housed in the School of Liberal Arts, which includes departments in Political Science, History, World Languages & Cultures, and Philosophy & Religious Studies.
