Job Summary:

Marist College invites applications for the position of Staff Accountant in the Department of the Business Office. The Staff Accountant supports the financial compliance of all grant awards and sponsored projects. The selected candidate will be integral to establishing, monitoring and communicating the policies and procedures in order to ensure efficient operations and proper controls over grant transactions. Accounting services provided by the Staff Accountant includes grant budget development, financial reporting, compliance monitoring, budget to actual expense analysis and forecasting, invoicing and electronic cash requests. This position also supports other accounting staff and office needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or a related field.
  • Proficient in the use of automated general ledger systems, data report writing and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel and Word
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and to accuracy, while demonstrating the ability to work independently and prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills and willingness to research to offer guidance on regulations and compliance issues
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to handle situations with tact, persuasiveness and diplomacy. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with administrators, faculty principal investigators and sponsoring agency representatives is required

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate with the Academic Grants Office and other administrative grant writers in the budget development process to maximize sponsored project funding while verifying for accurateness and compliance
  • Conduct final review of proposal budgets prior to approval and submission
  • Follow through with key constituents on awarded projects throughout the life of the grant, including but not limited to; creation within the chart of accounts, recording and approval of grant transactions, effort certification, invoicing and electronic cash requests, ongoing communication and meeting with others to monitor and forecast financial activity, and close out of grants
  • Support compliance with all federal, state and other agency regulations in the financial accounting of grants
  • Interpret, implement and monitor all grant awards and subcontract instruments
  • Maintain the financial records for examination by auditors, sponsors and management
  • Analyze general ledger accounts to ensure accurate recording of financial transactions and timely reconciliation, including the investigation of variances, communication of findings and development of effective monitoring guidelines and assistance to internal departments to ensure proper accounting
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and year-end audit and tax return requirements. Prepare and substantiate schedules supplied to audit team, and communicate with audit team, including provision of samples and answering inquiries
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality, ensure a high level of data and system integrity, and deliver top quality customer service to the college and extended community

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience in an Accounting position, Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
  • Experience working in higher education or not-for-profit with experience in grant accounting
  • Familiarity and understanding of Uniform Guidance and other regulations and guidelines within the notice of grant awards
  • Banner Finance experience

  • Tuition Benefits:
    • Up to 16 undergraduate credits per semester. Up to 18 graduate credit per academic calendar. Eligibility extends to employee, spouse, and dependent children under age 26.
    • College pays 100% tuition only.
    • Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.

About the Department/School:

Business Affairs is a dynamic team of collaborative business professionals. The department oversees functions including Accounts Payable, Cashiering, Payroll, Purchasing, Budgeting, Forecasting and Accounting Support, all reporting to the CFO/Vice President of Business Affairs. This position reports to the Assistant Controller, and interacts closely with members of the team and professionals from across the Marist College community.
