Job Summary:

This part time position provides academic support and direction for traditional undergraduate students studying Communication in the School of Communication and the Arts.  The mission of academic advising at Marist is to provide the resources and teach skills necessary for students to develop and achieve their academic plan and career goals while providing a mentoring role. 

The role of an Academic Advisor at Marist includes using resources and systems to help inform students of opportunities, monitor their progress, make referrals and recommendations to their up-and-coming semester, as well as their overall 4-year plan and be available to meet with students in person, on campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communication or similar. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Essential Functions:

  • Advisors are expected to utilize both Degreeworks ® and Banner ® to track and manage student progress and courses available through both paper and electronic tools
  • Learn the new electronic 4-year plan software and become the internal expert to help other advisors navigate this new tool that the School of Communication and the Arts is piloting. 
  • Post office hours and commit 29 hours of office hours for students to make appointments to meet one-on-one per week.
  • Gain knowledge of all advising systems and tools as well as curriculum requirements for Communication majors, with various Minors and Concentrations.
  • Gain knowledge of various programs such as Study Abroad and Internships that are available for students to access during their time at Marist in order to help students navigate off campus opportunities. 
  • Monitor each student’s progress, proactively email students to set up appointments as needed. 
  • Generate meaningful discussions with student advisees, including how a student’s academic and extra-curricular choices match to their current career goals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
