Position Title:

Associate Dean of Teacher Education

Job Summary:

Marist College invites applications for the position of Associate Dean of Teacher Education. This key administrator will hold a faculty title in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS). The Associate Dean will have ultimate responsibility for the management and direction of all the current education programs.  These programs are: (1) dual certification for childhood education (grades 1-6) and special education, (2) a 5-year program in adolescence education that allows for grades 7-12 certification in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, French or Spanish; special education certification; and a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT), (3) a birth – second grade certification, and (4) an advanced MA in Educational Psychology that is offered in three formats; as a 5-year program for our undergraduates earning childhood education/special education certification, in a hybrid format using eight days each summer for intensive on-ground work and all other course work completed online, and in an evening on- ground format. SBS also has a program director who is responsible for the direct oversight of the MA Educational Psychology programs. There are approximately 300 students pursuing program (1) above and 100 students pursuing program (2) above. The Associate Dean teaches one course per academic year.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in education or a closely related field, classroom teaching experience, and at least five years of higher education administration experience.

Essential Functions:

Responsibilities for the Associate Dean of Teacher Education include the following:

  • Providing leadership to enhance existing programs and develop new programs that are responsive to students’ needs, including adult students
  • Maintaining and developing productive relationships with our P-12 partners, the regional school community, government and accrediting agencies, and professional organizations and associations
  • Overseeing the accreditation process; we are scheduled for a review with AAQEP in fall of 2023
  • Understanding the importance of creating an inclusive community with curriculum that is responsive to all learners as well as an awareness of current trends in the field that support underrepresented populations
  • Managing the day to day operations of the education department, such as:  creating and managing course schedules for all education faculty; holding regular education department meetings; mentoring new faculty; recruiting and supervising part time faculty; advising students. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Skills pertinent to creating assessment strategies and interpreting data analysis relevant to accreditation processes are important.  We seek a candidate with a record of innovative program and curriculum development with a commitment to high standards for our teacher candidates.

About the Department and School:

The Teacher Education department is one of four departments in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.  The other departments are psychology, criminal justice, and social work/sociology. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of SBS, and is part of the leadership team that guides the work in all the departments of SBS.
