Job Summary:

The English Department at Marist College invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of African American literature and American ethnic literature to begin in August 2020. A secondary specialization in Latinx literature, Asian American literature, African Diaspora literature or contemporary global literature is preferred. Depending on teaching and research interests, candidates will be able to contribute to one of our interdisciplinary programs such as African Diaspora Studies, American Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies or Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Candidates with an expertise or interest in digital humanities or service learning pedagogy are especially welcome. Candidates must demonstrate strong or potential accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing Marist’s commitment to achieving academic excellence and diversity.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in English or Comparative Literature is required. Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness is required. 

Essential Functions:

Successful candidates will be able to teach First Year Seminar courses, our Writing for College course, and general education courses that contribute to diversifying our curriculum. The teaching load will be 4-3, however, faculty who achieve and maintain an outstanding record of scholarship maybe eligible for a 3-3 teaching load.  In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, faculty participate regularly in-service activities for our students, Marist College, and the community.

The English Department that includes 17 faculty is one of the largest on the Marist campus, and offers a BA in English with concentrations in literature, writing, and theater.  The department also offers popular minors in creative writing, professional writing, and theater. The English Department is housed in the School of Liberal Arts, which includes departments in history, modern languages, philosophy & religious studies, and political science, and many interdisciplinary programs such as American Studies, African Diaspora Studies, and Latin American & Caribbean Studies.
