Assistant Professor of History/Africana Studies

Job Summary:

The History Department at Marist College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of History with a specialization in African history and Africana Studies to begin in August 2022.  The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating our growing Africana Studies Program. Teaching responsibilities include survey courses, an Introduction to Africana Studies course, and upper-level courses created by the successful candidate.  A secondary focus in Latin American history or the Islamic world will be considered a plus.  Candidates will be expected to teach in our first year seminar program, and expertise or interest in service learning pedagogy is especially welcome. A strong commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduates is required. Candidates must demonstrate strong or potential accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing Marist's commitment to achieving academic excellence and diversity.

This position is part of a cluster hire and we will welcome four new faculty members as part of the Africana Studies and Latinx & Latin American Studies cluster. These new faculty members will join faculty in the departments of English, history, modern languages and cultures, and political science who focus on Africana Studies and Latinx & Latin American Studies. The position is also part of a major college-wide hiring initiative with the goal of creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive institution.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in History or Africana Studies is required.
  • Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness is required.

Essential Functions:

  • Successful candidates will be able to teach First Year Seminar courses, and general education and upper level courses that contribute to diversifying our curriculum.
  • The teaching load will be 3-4, however, faculty who achieve and maintain an outstanding record of scholarship maybe eligible for a 3-3 teaching load.
  • The coordination of the Africana Studies program may include additional course load reductions.
  • In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, faculty participate regularly in service activities for our students, Marist College, and the community.

About the Department and School:

The History Department includes 10 faculty and offers an optional Public History concentration.  Many history majors are also enrolled in our five year Master’s Degree in Teaching program. The department contributes substantially to our interdisciplinary programs in Africana Studies, American Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The History Department is housed in the School of Liberal Arts, which includes departments in English, modern languages & cultures, philosophy & religious studies, and political science.  The School of Liberal Arts is also home to the Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership and the Hudson River Valley Institute.
