Job Summary:

The School of Communication and the Arts at Marist College is seeking a MakerSpace and Studio Operations Manager to oversee the daily operations of the state-of-the-art, newly built MakerSpace, and fashion design and art studios. The primary users of these facilities are the faculty and students in the Art, Digital Media and Fashion programs. 

This position is the key student and faculty contact regarding day-to-day operation of the Maker Space and studios in the newly opened Steel Plant, home to the art, digital media, and fashion programs at Marist College. The manager will be responsible for smooth day-to-day operation of the creative spaces – training students and faculty in the use of equipment, monitoring on-going operation of equipment, keeping equipment in good working order, and tracking the use, inventory and reordering of consumables. Equipment oversight will include 3D printing in existing and new forms, laser technology, textile printing/creation, body scanning, digital pattern making, and other emerging technologies. Additionally, the successful candidate will have experience with industrial sewing and pressing equipment and be prepared to monitor day-to-day function, operation and maintenance of this equipment, make necessary minor adjustments and repairs, provide student training as needed, and conduct routine maintenance in the Fashion Program design studios.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in art, fashion or relevant discipline by the time of appointment
  • Minimum of two years professional experience in the use/operation/technical support of commonly used techniques found in a MakerSpace or FabLab in an institutional setting, or similar capacity
  • Experience with laboratory and shop safety procedures and training
  • Working knowledge and experience in DIY and maker market and/or advanced manufacturing or rapid prototyping, including 3D printers, laser cutters, digital embroidery and the like
  • Ability to interact effectively orally and in writing with a culturally diverse range of students and colleagues and a commitment to student-centered education


Essential Functions:

The primary professional responsibilities of this operations manager are to:

  • Oversee daily operations of space.
  • Oversee safety training to insure safe practices within the space.
  • Oversee training on tools and machinery.
  • Set up and operate system for material purchases for student use with Marist Money.
  • Create and oversee practices to prevent material damage and theft.
  • Oversee maintenance of tools and machinery.
  • Regulate usage by classes/students/open studio times
  • Hire and oversee student workers to manage open studio times.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in art, fashion or relevant discipline by the time of appointment.

The Art and Digital Media Department and the Fashion Program are robust educational programs located within the School of Communication and the Arts. More than 600 students are enrolled in major and minor degree programs in studio art, art history, digital media, fashion design and fashion merchandising. In addition, the department operates international programs and two graduate programs.
