Job Summary:

The History Department and the School of Liberal Arts at Marist College invites applications for the Dr. Frank T. Bumpus Chair in Hudson River Valley History. The Bumpus Chair is an endowed position in the School of Liberal Arts at Marist College, created to advance study and scholarship related to the Hudson River Valley’s rich history and culture.

We particularly encourage applications from candidates with an interdisciplinary approach to exploring the connections among the artistic, economic, environmental, social, and/or political facets of the history of the Hudson River Valley. Successful candidates will have established a distinguished record of scholarly achievement and have a strong interest engaging the wider public through large-scale projects, including conferences, lecturers, performances, and/or exhibitions. The Bumpus Chair receives considerable logistical support in these wider endeavors through Marist’s Hudson River Valley Institute. As the academic arm of the Hudson River Valley Natural Heritage Area, the HRVI maintains a Digital Library and publishes The Hudson River Valley Review.

Minimum Qualifications:

A PhD in history or similar degree is required. Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level is also required. A strong record of professional activity, including academic publications, is required.

Essential Functions:

The teaching load will be 2-2 with a mix of introductory and advanced courses related to the Hudson River Valley. The Bumpus Chair will be a leader active in their professional field, who participates regularly in service activities for our students, Marist College, and the community. Start date is July 1, 2024.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate students in project-based research, scholarship, and/or independent creative activity.

  • 403(b) Tax Deferred Annuity – Roth option available. Voluntary, up to IRS maximum contribution.
  • Tuition Benefits:
    • Up to 16 undergraduate credits per semester. Up to 18 graduate credit per academic calendar. Eligibility extends to employee, spouse, and dependent children under age 26.
    • College pays 100% tuition only.
    • Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.

*Eligibility requirements including waiting periods and/or employee probationary periods may apply at the discretion of the College.

About the Department/School:

The History Department at Marist includes 10 full-time faculty, over 100 history majors, and offers courses in a wide range of academic areas. The History Department also contributes to several interdisciplinary programs such as American Studies; Global Studies; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and Environmental Studies. The department is housed in the School of Liberal Arts, home to the departments of English, World Languages and Cultures, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Political Science. Interdisciplinary programs include American Studies, Africana Studies, and Latin American & Caribbean Studies. The ABA-approved Paralegal Studies Program and the Pre-Law Program are also part of the School of Liberal Arts. In addition to the Hudson River Valley Institute, the School hosts the Center for Civic Engagement, the Weiss Language Center, the Writing Center, and the Theatre Program.
